The summer of 2020 arrived with a heavy stillness. We were all weathering the tail-end of a long isolation, feeling the ache of being "social beings" without a place to gather. We were learning, quite deeply, that community isn't just a luxury—it is our heartbeat.
The challenge was a delicate one: How could we create together while staying safely apart?
The answer arrived in the form of forty simple wooden birdhouses. They were crafted by a retired local carpenter who had spent his own quiet months of isolation at his workbench, turning cedar and pine into art. We invited the neighborhood to join in, and soon, forty families carried those little houses home.
In kitchens and on sun-drenched porches across Stoneham, the magic began. While the world felt uncertain, hands were busy with brushes and bright palettes. When the birdhouses were returned and installed along the Tri-Community Greenway, the path was transformed into a gallery of hope. Every passerby could feel the collective joy stitched into every painted shingle and colorful door.
The true "thank you" came six months later. Upon a closer look, we discovered that the community hadn't just built a gallery—they had built a neighborhood. Many of the houses had tiny, chirping occupants nestled inside.
Five years have passed, and as those houses weathered into the landscape, our group grew stronger. That single project hooked us; it showed us that art is the ultimate bridge. From those forty little birdhouses, the Stoneham Art Group was born—a place where we continue to create, bond, and take pride in the beautiful, vibrant community we call home.
